Security officials at the G7 leaders summit in Kananaskis say plans are in place, including the possibility of evacuations, if wildfires become a serious threat later this month.

As Albertans forced out by wildfires wait for word when it will be safe to return home, other evacuees are learning their homes have been lost to the flames.

A second day of rain slowed the spread of wildfires in Alberta, allowing some oil sands production to resume. Conditions Wednesday were a stark contrast to the explosive spread of blazes last week that forced evacuations and at one point shut about 7% of Canada’s daily oil production.

Wildfires scorching several Canadian provinces have driven at least 33,400 people from their homes, with smoke now reaching all the way to Europe.

Showers were expected Tuesday in the area around Edmonton, where some of the province’s wildfires are burning, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Already, a key road near Swan Hills — in the vicinity of one of the year’s major blazes — has reopened due to the reduced threat.

The massive wildfire that destroyed part of Fort McMurray in May, 2016, resulted in oil sands production losses as high as one million barrels a day at the height of the disaster. The production outage caused by the wildfire resulted in a 14-per-cent decline of crude oil exports loaded in Alberta.
