Bangladesh 5.5-magnitude earthquake – what we know so far
An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 hit Bangladesh at 10:38am (04:38 GMT), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The shaking lasted for 26 seconds. Dhaka resident Shadman Sakif Islam told Al Jazeera that “small ripples” he noticed in his coffee were followed by a “massive shake that started occurring without any warning” as the earthquake took hold.
It was a Friday morning. The clock showed 10:38 AM. Since it was the weekly holiday, many working people were still asleep.
At least eight people are dead after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh. The earthquake occurred at 10:38 a.m. local time on Friday, Nov. 21, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Videos obtained by NBC News showed the moment the earthquake struck, leading many to flee for safety as buildings shook around them.
A BMD bulletin, signed by Nizam Uddin Ahmed, Professional Assistant, stated that the earthquake measured 3.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre at Baipayl, located 29 kilometres northwest of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The Bangladesh vs Ireland second Test was temporarily halted for a few seconds after 5.5-magnitude earthquake rocked Dhaka and several parts of the country. Play resumed after few seconds.
The tremors were felt in West Bengal's Kolkata at 10:10 am and lasted for about 20 seconds, according to reports.
