French steelmaker Aperam on Tuesday called on Brussels to intervene to curb imports if new 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports into the United States prompt companies to ship more to the European Union instead.

President Trump’s threats are carrying more weight after his moves against Canada, Mexico and China. Europe has been preparing for the possibility of a trade war for months.

Brussels is expecting to be targeted by U.S. trade tariffs, and EU diplomats are hoping they can still make a deal.
