In a meeting that defied expectations, US President Donald Trump hosted New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday.

The mutual bonhomie was a striking turnabout for both Mr. Trump and Mr. Mamdani, who had traded labels like “communist” and “despot” during the mayoral campaign.

And while everyone knew there was a good chance of at least one viral moment, no one expected it would come when Trump told Mamdani it was “OK” for the democratic socialist to call him a fascist.
