Hackers have breached the Tea app, which recently went viral as a place for women to safely talk about men, and tens of thousands of women’s selfies and photo IDs have now seemingly been leaked online.

Marketed as "helping women date safe" and described as "Yelp for men," Tea is currently the No. 1 lifestyle download in the U.S. App store — but it's also the topic of heated debates about safety and privacy.

Tea's investigation of the incident found that app users' direct messages had been breached, along with some of their photos. "Out of an abundance of caution, we have taken the affected system offline," San Francisco-based Tea said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch.
