Wild weather on the Oregon coast may have gotten even wilder than expected late Monday night when a tornado hit the land near Rockaway Beach, according to a preliminary report from the National Weather Service.

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN) — A trained weather spotter reported a tornado yesterday evening around 9:24 pm in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. According to the National Weather Service, the KRTX weather radar, located in Portland, showed a “fairly strong velocity couplet” in the area at the same time the tornado was reported.

While the tornado hasn't been confirmed, the NWS said it received reports of a suspected waterspout that made landfall in Rockaway Beach around 9:30 p.m.

A strong low pressure system swept through the area, which turned into a thunderstorm, and caused a brief tornado in Holly.

According to American Legion Post 149, the tornado created a large crack in its southern wall that reached the inside of the building. They believe the roof may have been lifted off its concrete walls briefly, due to the amount of leaves and other debris found inside the building.

The tornado spun up in a storm system that swept through Holly during the evening. It touched down at 6:56 p.m. and picked up two minutes later. It was on the ground for approximately a mile. Preliminary reports list the storm as an EF-0,
