A tsunami advisory was issued for the California coast following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia on Tuesday afternoon, July 29.

A tsunami warning has been issued for Hawaii, where waves set off by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Russia’s remote Far East are expected to arrive after 7 p.m. local time.

While there was no widespread damage reported in California as of Wednesday morning, the effects of the tsunami will likely be felt along the coast throughout the day, with officials warning against getting close to the ocean. In Point Reyes, the weather service recorded 2-foot-high waves over 3 hours after the first waves arrived.
