A teenager suffered what officials called “significant thermal burns” after he broke through crust near a geyser at Yellowstone National Park. The National Park Service said the incident involving a 17-year-old occurred Monday in the vicinity of Lone Star Geyser near Old Faithful at the famed park in Wyoming.

A 17-year-old badly burned his foot and ankle on Monday (July 28) while hiking off trail near the Lone Star Geyser, Yellowstone National Park representatives said.

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo.– A 17-year-old boy badly burned his foot and ankle during a hike Monday in Yellowstone National Park. The National Park Service said the teenager was hiking near the Lone Star Geyser when the thin crust underfoot broke and his foot stepped into scalding-hot waters, leaving him significantly burned.
