The Thursday lawsuit said laying off nearly 2,000 people at the department will hurt schools and universities across the country.

AGs from 20 states say the layoffs are so severe that the department “can no longer function, and cannot comply with its statutory requirements.”

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes and 19 other state Attorneys General are suing the Trump administration over mass firings at the U.S. Department of Education, calling the cuts a deliberate effort to dismantle public education.
