Some parts of the state will see total accumulation of more than a foot of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Weather officials say the possibility for snow in Des Moines and other parts of Iowa could come as early as this weekend.
KIMT-TV 3 News - The National Weather Service is predicting around a foot of snow in North Iowa by Sunday morning and slightly less in southeastern Minnesota. The forecasts for both regions are similar: WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR NORTH IOWA FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM CST SUNDAY.
The same storm and cold front is also expected to bring thunderstorms and a chance of heavy rain on Saturday from southern Missouri down to Louisiana and Texas.
Snow and chilly temperatures have already greeted some Thanksgiving travelers and plenty more could be on its way this holiday weekend.
