Elon Musk had more bold projections for Tesla's robotaxi. But investors didn't get much insight on the Austin launch during Wednesday's earnings call.

Tesla doesn't have the permits to run an autonomous vehicle taxi in California, but probably nothing stops a driver-assist based taxi.

Under California regulations, companies need to secure permits from CPUC and the California Department of Motor Vehicles in order to test and operate self-driving vehicles in the state. Reuters reported that Tesla has, to date, only secured the DMV permit to test its robotaxi vehicles with human drivers.

Tesla's Robotaxi is limited to invites only for now and there's no sure way of getting access. Some traveled thousands of miles just to try it.
