NEW YORK (AP) — Bo Horvat scored twice in New York's three-goal second period, and the Islanders beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 on Monday night. Simon Holmstrom also scored and Mathew Barzal had two assists as the Islanders won their second straight and fifth in seven games. Ilya Sorokin made 25 saves.

The Islanders scored three goals in five minutes and four seconds to secure the victory on home ice. Bo Horvat tied the game at one all for the veteran’s 15th goal of the season from Matt Barzal and Adam Pelech.

Leevi Merilainen made 24 saves for his second career shutout and Adam Gaudette's second period goal was the only one to beat Marcus Hogberg as the Ottawa Senators snapped the Isles' three-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory before a crowd of 15,101 at UBS Arena.

The New York Islanders (18-20-7) play host to the Columbus Blue Jackets (22-17-7) on Monday night on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in UBS Arena. The holiday game features the Islanders coming off a strong 4-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

The New York Islanders lost again, at home again, despite achieving the miracle of two power play goals. The loss is nothing, really, the way this team has been headed for most of this season, but the manner was a little disturbing.
