Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid's 2024-25 season is over. The team announced Thursday that Embiid has been ruled out for the remainder of the season because he is "medically unable to play." Previously, Embiid and the Sixers had been trying to manage pain and swelling in his left knee, which required surgery in February 2024.
Last season, Embiid was in the midst of one of the most prolific individual campaigns in NBA history before tearing the meniscus in his left knee. He’s struggled this year to gain full strength.

Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse told reporters on Saturday prior to the team's game against the Golden State Warriors that star big man Joel Embiid did not suffer a setback before the team shut him down for the remainder of the season due to a lingering left knee injury.
Joel Embiid has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, according to a Feb. 28 report from ESPN’s Shams Charania. Embiid has been struggling with a knee issue all season having undergone surgery to repair a torn meniscus last year.
“The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have been consulting with top specialists regarding ongoing issues with his left knee,” the team said in a statement. “After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation.”
