The National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning for portions of western Iowa through noon Tuesday.

Dodson said on Sunday and Monday, temperatures will be roughly 15 to 25 degrees below normal. Iowa is even nearing the typical coldest day of the year, Jan. 18, and is still far below expected temperatures. In Des Moines, temperatures are usually at a high of 31 and a low of 14 during January, according to the NWS.

(Area) Harrison, Shelby, Pottawattamie, Audubon, and Guthrie Counties are in an Extreme Cold Warning until Noon on Tuesday. The National Weather Service says the dangerously cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as ten minutes. Dress in layers if you must go outside.
