The two had called each other “fascist” and “communist,” but when President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani faced reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, they were just two iconoclastic New York politicians who were all smiles.
President Trump lavished praise on New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani as the two met for the first time in the Oval Office after a history of trading political insults.
In a surprising shift of tone, the two were positive and often complimentary, with President Trump saying NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani "can do some things that I think are gonna be really great."
Trump said he would even be comfortable moving back to New York City and living there with Mamdani as mayor, saying he was surprised how much they had in common.
"I expect to be helping him, not hurting him," Trump said of Mamdani, a democratic socialist who he previously denounced as "a communist."
The Dow gained 800 points, or 1.7%, and the broader S&P 500 rose 1.6%. The Nasdaq was about 1.7% higher. The rally came after New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said he supported lowering near-term interest rates, giving traders hope that they could get a December rate cut, after all.
"I think JD Vance is jealous," the Fox News host smirked. "I think the president wants to use [Mamdani] as a running mate. They got along fantastic."
