Vierling's return meant someone had to be sent down, and it was shortstop Trey Sweeney who was optioned to Triple-A to make roster space. Javier Báez will have Saturday off as Zach McKinstry will start at shortstop, again showing just how deep and versatile this Tigers roster has become to make a decision such as Sweeney's so difficult.

Matt Vierling is back, and this time he hopes to stick around for a while. Vierling, who has missed nearly the entire first half of the season due to injury, was reinstated from the injured list before Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.
