In response to users’ feedback about the Firefox Terms of Use, Mozilla updated some of the language about data usage. Mozilla also updated its Privacy FAQ.

Critics said the new terms implied Mozilla was asking users for the rights to whatever data they input or upload through Firefox.

The browser developer said concerns that the updated language allows it to do whatever it wants with users' data is unjustified.

These high-level appointments were announced by Laura Chambers, who hopped aboard as CEO a year ago; the hiring came the month after deep staffing cuts at the Mozilla Foundation – the non-profit that oversees the Mozilla Corporation that develops Firefox and other things.

Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, was intensely criticized by some users after amending its communications about how it handles users' data.

Mozilla is revising its new Terms of Use for Firefox introduced on Wednesday following criticisms over language that seemed to give the company broad ownership over user data. With the change, “we’re updating the language to more clearly reflect the limited scope of how Mozilla interacts with user data,” the company says in a Friday post.

In an effort to douse criticism that followed the introduction of its Terms of Use and updated Privacy Notice, Mozilla has made adjustments.

“Royalty-free” was used because Firefox is free and neither Mozilla nor the user should owe each other money in exchange for handling the data in order to provide the browser. And “worldwide” was used because Firefox is available worldwide and provides access to the global internet.
