These rumours were amplified by Allen’s relationship with Queen Elizabeth I’s head astronomer, the occultist and atheist, John Dee. Allen was also an early supporter of ou

New display at the Weston Library! 'The Lighted Window' is free to view in the Transept at the far end of Blackwell Hall and features a joy-sparking collection of the Bodleian's transparencies. Transparencies are coloured prints, varnished on the reverse and designed to be lit from behind (originally with an oil lamp or candle, though we now use LED lights) to reveal a captivating illuminated affect. Beautiful as they are, once backlit the transparencies magically reveal hidden colours and glowi

If Shōgun was on your watchlist between Christmas and New Year, here’s the real-world history behind it. When Tokugawa Ieyasu became shōgun, English navigator William Adams helped shape Japan’s early trade with Europe. The result was a shuinjō — a red-sealed trading licence. The original document is held by the Bodleian and is on display now in Treasured.
