E.W. Marland’s Most Unique Gift to Ponca City wasn’t oil or even the mansion. It was the Pioneer Woman statue. Marland launched a national competition, sending twelve models across the country by train for the public to vote on their favorite. In the end, Bryant Baker’s design won by a landslide, earning him up to $200,000 to create the 17-foot bronze we see today.
