Sammy Miller rides the 1925 Grindlay-Peerless ST1 at the 2025 VMCC Banbury Run. The standout feature on this bike is the somewhat unconventional, yet innovative sleeve-valve engine from Barr and Stroud of Glasgow. It is a four-stroke engine which was frequently used to power early aircraft. The design uses a ported sleeve-valve that is meddled between the piston and its cylinder. The sleeve is caused to slide up and down inside the cylinder, and at the same time rotate about its axis. This oscil

The Bradbury Boys! Mike Wills and his lads turn up to the 75th VMCC Banbury Run on a trio of 1911, 1912 and 1914 Bradbury motorcycles. ……………….. Bradbury and Co. Ltd was founded in 1852 in Oldham and manufactured sewing machines and later bicycles. In 1902 they started making motorcycles with a 1 3/4hp Minerva clip on engine. In 1903 they adopted J N Birch’s design where the crankcase was brazed into the frame and continued with this until 1923. In 1909 a 554cc side valve engine was introduced an

A 1920 Indian 7hp Powerplus at the 2024 VMCC Banbury Run. The Powerplus was built from 1916 to 1923 by the Hendee Manufacturing Company. It featured a 1000cc side-valve v-twin and was renowned for being a powerful, robust and reliable motorcycle. This particular example is unrestored and retains a delightful 'oily rag' patina. Thanks to the VMCC, the team at the British Motor Museum, and all of the volunteers and marshals who made it a top event. Video and content is original and copyright to The

A 1929 ABC - Austin Special. It was termed “The Nameless Wonder” in a 1931 edition of The Motor Cycle magazine. This unique and interesting motorcycle started life in 1929 when engineer John Shaw of Leeds began designing and building his own motorcycle using an ABC motorcycle frame and Austin 7 engine. The dinky motor made it an ideal mount for the duplex loop frame, and it was coupled to the rear wheel via a drive shaft. The motorcycle is water-cooled with radiators that resemble a Scott radiat

A 1927 Triumph Riccardo blowing off the cobwebs at the start of the 2024 Banbury Run. This charming old motorcycle was stored in a woodshed for many years before being released into the light of day, and this is possibly its first Banbury Run. The bike took its name from the engine designer Sir Harry Ricardo and featured an advanced and innovative overhead four valve design, fitted over a 499cc single cylinder. Thank you to the VMCC and the National Motor Museum for having us along to the event.

A 1924 FHW motorcycle is started up at the VMCC Banbury Run. This bike is one of two made by Frank Herbert Wells of Hitchin and features a 680cc JAP V-Twin. It was a small outfit, but the Wells Garage is still in existence and continues to provide a workshop space for servicing cars. Thank you to the VMCC Team for the invite to the event. A five-cylinder radial Special - the Verdel. This unique motorcycle is the creation of Paul Newsham, a fantastically talented engineer from Lancashire. It is powered by a 750cc five-cylinder radial engine that uses castings moulded by John Rice, and various parts sourced from Reliant car engines (pistons), parts from a lightweight Honda and a even lawn mower. Verdel was a Peugeot bicycle and car agency operating in Bapaume and Peronne pre-WW1. In 1912 Louis Verdel founded the "Société des Moteur

A 1925 Scott Super Squirrel (600cc three-speed) is fired up at the end of the VMCC Banbury Run. The two-stroke Super Squirrel was introduced in 1925 as a development from the 1924 TT machines (the 596 c.c. model put up the record lap in the course in the sidecar race). These motorcycles went against the grain - two-stroke, water-cooled, and of stood with an unusual stance. Watch to hear the iconic “yowl” of the engine when it is started up.
