Following the arrival of The Queen's coffin at Westminster Hall, the Abbey bells are ringing fully muffled – something which only happens following the death of the monarch. Muffles are leather pads fitted to a bell’s clapper to produce a soft, solemn sound. The Abbey bell ringers are ringing a full peal of Cambridge Surprise Royal to celebrate the birth of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s third child yesterday. It is a historic tradition that the Abbey’s bells are rung for significant royal occasions.
