In the Dani tribe of Papua, Indonesia, grief is expressed in a way that leaves a lasting mark. Women are expected to cut off a finger when a close family member dies, in a ritual called *Ikipalin*. This tradition symbolises their pain and love for the person they’ve lost. A sharp tool is used to remove the finger, and the wound is burned to stop the bleeding. The cut finger is either buried or burned to protect the family from bad spirits. Each missing finger tells a story of loss and sacrifice.
